Gulf Islands

Greater Victoria
Section titled “Greater Victoria”The provincial capital and surrounding waters offer excellent cruising with urban amenities.
Key locations:
- Victoria Inner Harbour — downtown moorage with walking access to everything
- Sidney — gateway to the Gulf Islands, good provisioning
- Oak Bay — scenic harbourage near Victoria
- Pedder Bay — west of Victoria, access to the Strait of Juan de Fuca
Navigation considerations:
- Strong currents in Baynes Channel and around Trial Islands
- Busy ferry traffic from Swartz Bay
- Cross-border clearance available at Sidney and Victoria
Sunshine Coast
Section titled “Sunshine Coast”The mainland coast north of Vancouver, accessible by ferry or boat from the Gulf Islands.
Key locations:
- Gibsons — artist community with a protected harbour
- Pender Harbour — collection of small marinas and anchorages, excellent provisioning
- Powell River — northern Sunshine Coast hub, fuel and supplies
- Lund — traditional “end of the road” and gateway to Desolation Sound
Navigation considerations:
- Malaspina Strait can have strong winds in afternoon
- Jervis Inlet has dramatic scenery but limited anchorages
- Good cell service along most of the coast
Desolation Sound
Section titled “Desolation Sound”One of the finest cruising destinations in the world. Warm water for swimming, dramatic mountain scenery, and excellent anchorages.

Vancouver Island East Coast
Section titled “Vancouver Island East Coast”The protected east coast of Vancouver Island from Victoria north to Campbell River.
Key locations:
- Nanaimo — major provisioning port, good marinas
- Dodd Narrows — slack-water-only passage near Nanaimo
- Ladysmith — historic town with a well-protected harbour
- Comox/Courtenay — northern base for Desolation Sound trips
- Campbell River — salmon fishing capital, gateway to Discovery Islands
Navigation considerations:
- Dodd Narrows requires careful slack water timing (6-8 knots max current)
- Northumberland Channel can have strong winds
- Heavy log boom traffic near some ports
Cross-Border Considerations
Section titled “Cross-Border Considerations”Cruising between Washington and BC requires clearing customs:
- Canadian entry ports: Sidney, Victoria, Bedwell Harbour (South Pender Island), Nanaimo
- US entry ports: Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, Anacortes, Point Roberts
- Keep vessel documentation, passports, and crew lists readily available
